Why begin with Babel?
Before asking who Mystery Babylon might be, Dr Joseph Opare goes back to the name itself. The opening episode follows the story to Shinar and the city of Babel. He explores the name’s origin and why that earlier history matters to the question in Revelation.
This gives the investigation two starting points: the ancient story and the later prophecy. How do they connect? Why return to Babylon when describing a mystery of power and influence?

What clues does Revelation 17 give?
The episode turns to Revelation 17 and asks what must be true of any proposed identity. A theory needs to fit the description being examined. Which details does Dr Opare focus on, and what do those details ask us to look for?
That is what makes the subject more than a guessing game. The investigation follows the chapter’s clues before reaching for a name. Watch how Dr Opare builds the questions that guide the rest of the series.
Why are there different answers?
The video considers several suggested identities. Each raises the same challenge: how well does it match the Biblical description? Does it explain the details together, or only one part of the picture?
Rather than give away the possibilities here, the episode takes viewers through the discussion. You can hear why each idea enters the debate and consider which questions remain open. This first chapter begins the search; it does not close it.
An ancient name, a continuing mystery
One of the episode’s central questions is how the history of Babylon helps us read Revelation. Is the earlier story simply background, or does it help explain why this name carries such weight in the prophecy?
Dr Opare brings history and Biblical interpretation together to explore that connection. The interest lies in the journey between the passages: what changes when the ancient roots and the prophetic description are considered side by side?
Where does the trail lead next?
Watch Part 1 above to follow the opening investigation and form your own questions. Then continue with Part 2, which turns to Revelation 18. There, the focus shifts towards trade, luxury and the consequences of Babylon’s fall.
