Babylon’s Pharma SECRET Revealed in the Book of Revelation?

Why does Revelation connect sorcery with the deception of nations? What can the original Greek tell us—and how does that question fit into the mystery of Babylon?

Dr Joseph Opare explores the word, its historical meanings and how he connects it with faith and power today. Start with the passage, then watch how he builds the wider argument.

The passage: Revelation 18:23

The statement about nations being deceived by Babylon’s sorceries appears in Revelation 18:23. Read the verse in context. It is the passage at the centre of the episode’s discussion of deception.

What the Greek word means

Strong’s Greek lexicon, as presented by Blue Letter Bible, connects pharmakeia with medication and, by extension, magic, sorcery and witchcraft. See the lexicon entry for G5331. This range of meaning explains why the word attracts attention in a discussion connecting substances, spiritual practices and deception.

Thayer’s lexicon also includes sorcery and magical arts among its senses. Read Thayer’s entry. A lexicon is a dictionary that explains how a word has been used; the surrounding passage helps readers understand its meaning in a particular setting.

The episode’s argument about influence

Dr Opare reads Babylon as a centre of influence capable of shaping how nations think and act. Within that interpretation, the discussion of pharmakeia becomes part of a larger warning about spiritual deception and the exercise of power.

In that sense, the subject is about trust as much as vocabulary. What makes a claim persuasive? Does it appeal to fear, status, convenience or the promise of certainty? These are useful questions whenever a message asks people to place confidence in it.
